Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to popular questions: Explore our FAQ Section.
What is the history behind the Braided Hair Cent (1839-1857)?
The Braided Hair Cent was introduced in 1839 as a successor to the Coronet Cent, which featured a Liberty head with a coronet. The Braided Hair design, as the name suggests, depicted Lady Liberty with her hair intricately braided and wearing a headband inscribed with the word "Liberty." The reverse side featured a wreath encircling the denomination "One Cent" and the inscription "United States of America." This design remained in use until the end of the series in 1857.
How rare are Braided Hair Cents?
The rarity of Braided Hair Cents can vary depending on the specific date and mint mark. Some dates in the series are considered scarcer than others, and certain mintages were lower, leading to higher collectible value. Generally, the earlier dates tend to be more sought after by collectors. However, availability can fluctuate over time due to market demand and availability. It is advisable to consult reputable coin catalogs, coin dealers, or online marketplaces to assess the current rarity and availability of specific Braided Hair Cents.
What factors determine the value of a Braided Hair Cent?
Several factors influence the value of a Braided Hair Cent, including its condition, rarity, mint mark (if applicable), and demand from collectors. Coins in better condition, with original details and minimal wear, typically command higher prices. Rare dates or those with low mintages can also significantly impact the value. The presence of any notable errors or varieties can add to a coin's desirability. It is recommended to consult professional coin appraisers or reference reputable pricing guides to obtain a more accurate estimation of the value of a specific Braided Hair Cent.
